Ohio Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel

Progress Toward Achievement of Goals for 2003 – 2004

1.         Increase visibility and knowledge of TRIO programs in Ohio.

  • The Higher Educational Information System of the Ohio Board of Regents is helping us to compile tracking data for use in promoting the effectiveness of Ohio TRIO programs.

  • We have developed our collaboration with the Ohio College Access Network (OCAN) and GEAR UP. OCAN and GEAR UP presented at the OAEOPP 2004 Professional Development Conference. Twenty-six OAEOPP members attended the OCAN GEAR UP conference in Canton, Ohio. James Cullen of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative was honored with the Award of Excellence for Outstanding Program Staff presented by Student Loan Funding.

  • Past President Geraldine Hayes Chavez represents TRIO on the Student Access & Success Coordinating Council of Ohio (SASCCO). SASSCO has three goals: (1) increasing collaboration among college access organizations, (2) developing a statewide strategic marketing plan for higher education and (3) developing measures of success.

  • State initiative event in Columbus, March 17, 2004. We hosted a breakfast for political and educational leaders and TRIO participants, followed by a time for TRIO participants to shadow their legislators. Speakers included State Senator Joy Padgett and two TRIO Achievers, Dr. Jacklyn Chisholm of Case Western Reserve University and Richard Arthur of the Portsmouth City Schools.

  • State Senator Ray Miller and four other state senators have introduced legislation to provide state funding for TRIO programs in Ohio. Senator Miller discussed his proposal at the OAEOPP Professional Development Conference.

2.         Promote program improvement and professional development of TRIO programs in Ohio.

  • The Thirtieth Annual Professional Development Conference in Columbus, April 25 – 28, 2004, was attended by 83 professionals.
  • Participants in the MAEOPP Institute for Advancement of Leadership and Program Management: Sidney Childs, Bowling Green State University, 2003 – 2004, Marlena Beavers, Sinclair Community College, Felissa Eafford, Cuyahoga Community College, Kimberly Grieve, Lourdes College, Dana Lawless-Andric, Kent State University, and Cynthia Partridge, University of Cincinnati, 2004 – 2005.

  • Emerging Leaders Institute participants: Robert Muhammad, Wittenberg University, and Stancy Sykes-Cade, University of Akron, 2003 – 2004, Ralonda Ellis-Hill, Cuyahoga Community College, and Ieesha Perkins, Wittenberg University, 2004 – 2005.

3.         Promote involvement of TRIO personnel throughout Ohio in OAEOPP and in the Ohio TRIO family.

  • Membership continues to grow. We now have more than 130 members.

  • The Student Leadership Conference in April was attended by 188 students and 50 professionals.

  • The Association Planning and Development Committee, under the leadership of Dr. Cheri Westmoreland, presented a general session at the Professional Development Conference, generating ideas from the membership on the directions in which the association should be moving in the future. The committee followed up with a fall board retreat to develop a strategic plan for the association, facilitated by Dr. Bobby Beavers of Sinclair Community College. The committee has developed a plan for presentation to the membership.
